Antimicrobial Wiring Devices & Cables in the Food & Beverage Industry

Antimicrobial cables are designed to inhibit the growth of bacteria, molds, mildew, and fungi. As such, they provide a long-term hygiene benefit for food and beverage facilities, where microorganisms can rapidly sicken a large number of people. 

Instead of applying an external disinfectant to subdue bacteria, antimicrobial cables have additives that are manufactured directly into the product. The components are gradually released to the surface, providing continuous, long-lasting protection against the growth of harmful foodborne illnesses such as E. coli, listeria, and salmonella. 

Because this form of protection is embedded throughout the product, the antimicrobial properties will still work at full strength in the event of an abrasion, scuff, or physical cut. Moreover, the growth inhibition is consistent throughout the life of the product.

After seeing the typical prices, some consumers question whether the additional upfront cost of antimicrobial cabling is worth it. It’s important to remember that  a product recall can go so far as to bankrupt a company. According to a joint study by the Food Marketing Institute and the Grocery Manufacturers Association, the average cost of a recall for a food processing company is $10 million. This figure does not include additional losses due to reduced sales and brand damage. 

Investing in antimicrobial products instead of opting for their cheaper counterparts ultimately saves the company money and better protects workers and consumers against foodborne illness.
